ESD/CES Gordie Howe International Bridge Tour

CES joined the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) for the Gordie Howe International Bridge Tour event on Friday, November 17, 2023. The event consisted of a presentation by Mohammed Alguhurabi, P.E., Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and then a visit to the main bridge and supporting bridge sites. Mohammed managed the Michigan Department of Transportation’s involvement in the successful implementation of the June 2012 Crossing Agreement with the Government of Canada, including a 3-year procurement process for the Public-Private Partnership Project Agreement between the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority and the consortium of Bridging North American for the design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is a once-in-a-generation undertaking. Not only will the project deliver much-needed transportation improvements for international travellers, it will also provide jobs and opportunities for growth to the Windsor-Detroit region and includes features that make this project truly distinctive.

The project is being delivered through a public-private partnership (P3). A public-private partnership is a long-term performance- based approach to procuring public infrastructure where the private sector assumes a major share of the risks in terms of financing and construction and ensuring effective performance of the infrastructure, from design and planning, to long-term maintenance.

There are four components to the bridge:

1 - The Bridge (cable-stayed design)

2 - Canadian Port of Entry

3 - US Port of Entry

4 - Michigan Interchange (4 new road bridges, 5 new pedestrian bridges, connecting ramps, etc.)
