Ohio has over 600 FDA-registered medical device and component makers, many of which are in Cleveland. For instance, ten of the country's top twenty medical device manufacturers currently maintain facilities in the Cleveland area, including such giants as Johnson & Johnson, GE Healthcare, Philips Medical Systems, and Steris. The largest manufacturer of shape-memory devices and stents is also in Cleveland.
There are multiple explanations for why the Cleveland area has a well-established history in medical innovation. If we go back 75 years, Cleveland Clinic physicians performed the first “stopped heart” using a heart-lung machine that had been developed by Dr. Willem Kolff. Also in the 1950’s Dr. Sones discovered moving cine-coronary angiography. This technology revealed the natural history of coronary artery disease, which ultimately led to Cleveland Clinic’s pioneering work in coronary artery bypass. These kinds of breakthroughs have continued decade after decade and has led to a local biomedical industry that is supported by one of the largest concentrations of research hospitals and academic institutions in the United States.

About the Presenter
Brian’s background in the area goes back to 1992 when he joined the Cleveland Clinic. In 2010 he became VP of Medical Device Development within the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron – a role that involved collaboration with NEOMED, Akron Children's Hospital and Summa. A couple of years later he was recruited by the University of Akron to chair their Department of Biomedical Engineering. During these years, he worked closely with the Veteran’s Administration, NASA, Cleveland-based medical device companies and federal funding agencies.
